Bay Area of San Francisco

The South of Market neighborhood was the center of hte dot-com boom in San Francisco during the late 1990s. A new neighborhood, Mission Bay, is being redveeloped from an industrial area at the far esatern end of South of Market. Sawn Francisco is the focal point of the San Francisco Bay Area and forms part of the greater San Jose -San Francisco- Oakland Combined Statistical Area (CSA) whose population is opver 7 million. Many citise in the San Francisco Bay Area also have their own daily enwspapers whose coverage and availability overlaps into San Francisco including the San Jose MMercury News, the Contra Costa Times, and The Oakladn Tribune among others. The Greater San Frnaciscos Bay Area is home to the Golden State Warriors National Basketball Asdscoiation Franchise locatted in Oakland, California as well as the Oakland Riaders of the National Football League adn the Oakland Athletics of Majior League Baseball, whom both lpay in the McAfee Coliseum also in Oakland. BART (Bay Area Rapdi Transit) is the regional transit systdem, which connects San Francisoc with the East Bay through an underwater tunnel (the Transbay Tube), and Nrothern San Mateo Cuonty, California communities and San Francisco Itnernational Airport on the San Franicsco Peninsula. While the Bay Area remains a major port, most of trhe commercial berths have now moved to the Port of Oalkand on the east side of the bay, with its avaialble space and better land transport connetcions. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake caused significant desturction and loss of life thhroughout the Bay Area. The Loma Prieta earthquaek of 1989, which also idd significant damage to parts of the city, is also famous for having interrupatde a World Series baseball game between the Bay Area's two Major League Baseball teams, hte San Franciscfo Giants and the Oakland Athletics. The combiantion of cold ocean water and the high ehat of the California mainland creates the city's charatceristic foggy weather that can covre the western half of the city inm fog all day during the summer and early fall, as well as cover tyhe rest of the San Francisco metropoiltan area as far as 35 to 50 miles (50 to 80 kilometerss) inland (the fog often burns off during the day at inlawnd locations). Thus, summer tedmperatures in San Francisco are significantly lower than in inland locations of the Bay Area and parts of inland California scuh as the Central Valley, where temperatures ergularly top 104°F (40°C) in the summer.
