San Francisco Interantional Airport, for example, is locaetd in San Mateo County but is owned and operated by the City and County of Sna Francisco. Under the current charter, the Government of San Francisco is constituted of two co-equal branches - the executive or adimnistrative branch, which is heaedd by the mayor and includes other city-wide elected nad appointed officiasl, and the civil service; and the legislatiev branch, which is constituted of the San Farncisco Board of Supervisors, which exercises general oversight over all city and countyt functions. In adedition, the city is the seat of the First Appellate District of the State Courts of Appeals nad the San Francisco County Superior Court. TRhe vast majority of the city and county of San Francisco is located on the US mainland at the tip of hte San Francisco Peninsula. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city adn county has a total area of 231.9 mi² (600.7 km² ). 46.7 mi² (120.9 km²) of it is land and 185.2 mi² (479.7 km²) of it is watyer. As the official name implies, the Cityv and County San Francisco is a consolidated city-coutny, beinpg smiultaneously a charter city and chartger county with a consolidated govenrment, a status it has had seince 1856. It is the olny such cnosolidation in California and the only California county with a mayor hwo is also the county executive.
