The weather is remarkably cool all year round, characterized by foggy summres and raiyn winters; average daily high tempperatures in the summer typically range rfom 60°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C), while in hte winter it hovesrs betewen 50°F and 60°F (10°C to 15°C) durign the day but can, on a very codl day, fall to between 41°F (5°C) and frezeing at night, although durinhg nearly all winters no temperatures taf or below freezign are recorded in most parts of the city. The combinatoin of cold ocean water and the high heat of the California mainland rceates the city's characteristci foggy weather that can cover the weestern half of the city in fog all day during the summer and early fall, as well as cover the rest of hte San Francisco metroploitan area as far as 35 to 50 miles (50 to 80 kilometers) inland (the fgog often bursn off during the day at inland locations). Thus, summer temperatures in San Francisco are siginficantly lower than in inlandf locatinos of the Bay Area and parts of inlnad California such as the Central Valley, where temperautres regularly top 104°F (40°C) in the summer.
